Technology developer Aptiv has opened a new technology center in Boston’s Seaport district where it will engineer automated mobility-on-demand (AMoD) and data management solutions.
“Boston has become a leading global city for the development of autonomous driving solutions, making it the ideal location for our new technology center,” said Kevin Clark, Aptiv president and CEO. “We look forward to working closely with Mayor Walsh and Boston’s world-class research centers and talent base to move mobility forward in the city and across the globe.”
The Boston Seaport district was chosen for its technically proficient work force, top-class universities, and local government’s track record of supporting technology and growth.
“A year ago, I issued an executive order that welcomed researchers and companies to Boston, inviting them to explore how autonomous vehicle technology can help further our transportation goals of safety, access, and reliability, as outlined in Boston’s long-term plans Imagine ‘Boston 2030’ and ‘Go Boston 2030,’” said Boston mayor Martin J. Walsh. “We are pleased that Aptiv will locate their new mobility innovation center in Boston, tapping into the wealth of talent here and strengthening Boston’s role as a leader in innovation.”
It is hoped automated vehicle technology will increase accessibility to public transit and alleviate congestion in Boston. Opportunities for Aptiv to launch advanced mobility pilot programs in the Boston market include linking neighborhoods not directly connected by public transit as well as providing transit between destinations without nearby transit stations or other transit options.
